The picture is by my former Algebraic Topology student, now former Ph.D. student Thomas Cottrell.
It is a beautiful rendition of an 11-holed torus, illustrating the 5-fold rotational symmetry giving the space as a 5-sheeted cover of the 3-holed torus.
